Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 107: Box or Blocks

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 107: Box or Blocks

Posted by Karen Burniston on Jul 8th 2026

Welcome to our July 2026 Designer Challenge with a theme of BOX OR BLOCKS.

I challenged the team to create a card featuring a box or blocks. Their creations are outstanding, as usual.

For my card and video I am using Christmas Presents as my box element to make a Rockin' Rectangle Twist card in a Christmas theme. If it is still July 2026 as you read this blog post be sure to check out our Sale Items section for a great sale on all of our Christmas dies and stamps.

Learn the technique by watching the full video tutorial here:

My card is A2-sized and features a collage Christmas tree on the front. I scoured several die sets for tiny collage elements for my trees and used paper scraps for all of the colors. The tree itself is from the Christmas Trees Pop Stand set. I used Rectangles - Crosshatch as the background.

As the card starts to open the alternate assembly of the Rockin' Rectangle and Twist Flower sets starts to pop up.

Inside some additional collage trees and a trio of Christmas presents pop up.

I used a lot of different die sets for the elements of this card. From Gingerbread Tiny House Add-ons I used the gingerbread man, peppermint candy, candy canes and gumdrops. From Tiny Gnomes I used the snowflake, jingle bells, bows and heart. From Fireplace Extras 1 I used the holly, berries and bows. From Gnome and Santa I used the small present and the mittens. From the Sleigh Pop-up I used the present and bow. From Tree Fruit I used the apples and pears. The greeting is from Season of Cheer clear stamps.

Want to give this card a try? Here are the supplies used on my card:

Now let's take a look at the amazing ideas from the Design Team. In each case you can click on the designer's name to go to their blog post. On their blogs you will find additional photos, supply lists and, in some cases, full video or photo tutorials.

Suzanne Smit used the same Rockin' Rectangle and Twist Flower technique to make this adorable Rubik's Cube card. Suzanne always uses our animal dies in such cute ways!

Sandy Diller has a tub of popcorn in this wonderful movie night card.

Lois Bak went all out for this amazing explosion box in a wedding theme. Wow!

Nicky Foden made a fabulous toy box from the Parcel Pop-up and Treasure Box die sets. I love her number blocks, too!

Sue Small-Kreider cleverly created a tackle box! Be sure to click over to watch the video.

Jen Webster made this super sweet candy hearts box with the Spinner Square revealing a greeting as the card opens. Love this!

Well we hope you feel inspired to use boxes or blocks in your cards. Join us next month on August 5, 2026 for Designer Challenge 108 with a theme of MEALTIME. We will be making cards incorporating food.

Happy Crafting!
