Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 98: PEEK-A-BOO!
Posted by Karen Burniston on Oct 8th 2025
Welcome to Designer Challenge 98 with a theme of PEEK-A-BOO! I challenged the team to interpret the phrase any way they wanted. As usual, they have posted clever interpretations!
For my card and video I am teaching an alternate assembly of the Stocking Pop-up decorated as a macabre Halloween tableau.
Learn how I made this card by watching the full tutorial here:
My card measures 4.5" square when closed and will mail in an A7 envelope. The front of the card features pieces from the Halloween Scene die set along with greetings from our new Halloween Phrases Clear Stamps on a label from the Lorna Label Pop-up and the cat from the Skeleton and Bat set.
As the card opens the pop-up starts to expand.
Inside a dark and eerie scene is revealed. To match the theme I created peek-a-boo window tombstones on each side of the pop-up. A tell tale heart from the Hearts-Crosshatch set is used in the center of the pop-up. To add the face to the Skeleton I used the new Fun Faces 1 Clear Stamp set, which offers a quick way to add faces to our animal and character dies rather than stenciling. And just to really set the macabre tone of the card I pierced the tell tale heart with a knife from the Oven Extras set.
In the video I mentioned that this alternate assembly of the Stocking Pop-up is very generic and can be decorated for any theme, especially love themes. (Minus the knife, of course!)
Ready to give this technique a try? Here are the dies and supplies used in the video. The two-sided paper for the pop-up came from Echo Park. The background paper is a decades-old piece from my stash.
Let's take a look at how our talented Design Team interpreted the PEEK-A-BOO challenge. In each case you can click the designer's name to go to their blog or social media post where you'll find additional photos, supply lists and, in some cases, videos!
Suzanne Smit made a sweet Tent Pop-up card for a sad reason. It is a sympathy card for a scout mother. I love how Suzanne honored her love of camping while also incorporating beautiful flowers and butterflies. The peeking bear and pattern plate background is perfection. I'm sure this card will bring comfort in a time of grief. Click over to Suzanne's blog to see the card front.
Nicky Foden made an adorable monster card for her granddaughter and it is such a clever mix of mechanisms. This card combines the Arch Pop-up and Oval Frames and then a lot of fun decorator dies and stamps. Be sure to click over to Nicky's blog to see her full photo tutorial for this card. Love it!
Jen Webster is so mighty with the pens! Her coloring is legendary, but also check out the veins and shirt details on this bloodthirsty vampire, made with the Bitty Ball Pop-up and Character Add-ons 1. The front of the box is also fabulous so be sure to click over for all the details. Epic!
Sue Small-Kreider created a spooky pop-up woods using the Arch Pop-up and Tree Pop-up and oooooh! (Scary!) I just love this idea! Sue has more details on her blog including a process video for this hair-raising haunted forest, so be sure to click over.
Lois Bak sent me this sassy monster card and it is adorable! I love how she created it using the Arch Pop-up, Curved Edges and the banner from the Graduation Elements. I am thrilled that she brought the idea of the arch-as-a-sassy-monster roaring to life! Click over for the card front.
Frances Byrne combined the Arch Pop-up with the Rainbow Add-ons, cut in all gray, to make a wonderful Halloween scene with flying witch. The details are fabulous, including that haunting purple background. Click over for more details on this great fright night card!
Sandy Diller made an insanely cool Halloween tree card featuring the Christmas Tree Pop-up completely covered in Tiny Trees branches and eyeballs! What a deliciously gruesome reveal! Sandy has a video of this card in action so be sure to click over to her blog for more details. Amazing!
Well we hope you are inspired to create some PEEK-A-BOO cards of your own. Join us next month on November 5, 2025 for our next Designer Challenge with a theme of FUN FACES. We will be incorporating the faces from the new Fun Faces 1 stamp set into our creations.
