Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 111: Fall Colors

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 111: Fall Colors

Posted by Karen Burniston on Nov 6th 2026

Welcome to our November Designer Challenge with a theme of FALL COLORS! I challenged the team to incorporate fall colors and the results are, in a word, breathtaking!

For my card and video I stacked Stocking Pop-up mechanisms to make an autumn sculpture card with plenty of pumpkins and fall leaves.

Learn how I made this card by watching this video:

My card measures 4.25" x 5.5" when closed and can be mailed in an A2 envelope. For the front of the card I used Autumn Elements and Cake Trims to create a simple lead-in. The big leaf patterned paper is from Paper House Productions, called "Brown Watercolor Leaves." The other patterned paper is 49 and Market "Spice- Caramel Toffee"

As the card opens the autumn sculpture starts to expand and pop up.

Inside the card I've reversed the lower mechanism of the Stocking Pop-up so it raises from the left side of the card. I added a second lower mechanism to the right side of the pop-up, reversed and oriented upside-down, to create multiple levels to decorate.

I know I sound like a broken record, but the goal of these Designer Challenge videos is to show alternate assemblies and combinations with dies that can be decorated for any theme. Swap out the colors and elements on this card and it can be used year-round. So please don't pack away your Stocking Pop-up die set after Christmas!

Now let's take a look at the wonderful Fall Colors inspiration by our talented design team. Click on a team member's name to go to their blog post where you will find additional photos and, in some cases, video or photo tutorials.

Nicky creates the best photo tutorials for her cards and it's well worth clicking over to check out this one. I love the way she used the Fall Colors theme on a birthday card. Her unique shading, composition skills and white pen detailing are all on display on this stunnign Photo Collage card. Amazing!

Sandy altered the Cake Pop-up into a generic three tier platform (tutorial here) and then amped the technique even further by turning the card and creating a brilliant vibrant turkey with feathers made from leaves. Everything about this card is stunning and if you watch the video on her blog post you can see the turkey neck is posable. Stunning!

Suzanne created a vibrant and beautiful fall-themed Flip Frame thank you card and I adore it! Her signature use of our animals dies adds such character to the card and I love the pops from the mushrooms. This is the perfect mix of paper and dies to create a rich autumn tapestry. Click over to see a video of this card in action.

Lois made a wonderful Lorna Label Thanksgiving card and mentions in her post that she combined some dies she hadn't used in a while with some of the newer stamps and dies. I noticed this trend among most of the cards this month - a chance to go back to some favorites dies and give them updated looks with newer offerings. And Lois did that perfectly with this festive fall-flavored card. Click over to see the card front. Wonderful!

Jen made a gorgeous Woven Basket Box Card for the challenge featuring lovely sunflowers. I love the way Jen's signature copic coloring transformed a generic flower into her favorite flower. The white embossed greeting on a dark oval gives such a striking look to the greeting. I love everything about this! Be sure to click over for more info on Jen's beautiful creation.

Well we hope you feel inspired to break out your fall colors. Join us next month on December 2, 2026 for Designer Challenge 112 with a theme of CHRISTMAS! We will be making Christmas cards.

Happy Crafting!
