Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 97: Letter
Posted by Karen Burniston on Sep 3rd 2025
Welcome to Designer Challenge 97 with a theme of LETTER. I challenged the team to interpret the word "letter" any way they wanted. I think you'll agree that their creations are super creative!
For my card and video I chose a literal interpretation of the word. This is a card that I would mail someone as a letter. A secondary use of the theme would be the word "you" that sounds exactly like the letter U. Bonus!
I created a balloon arch card decorated as a hungry caterpillar. Learn how I made this card by watching the full tutorial here:
My card is a standard A2 card measuring 4.25" x 5.5" when closed. For the front of the card I combined the die cut "Miss you" sentiment from Word Set 14 - Hugs with a stamped greeting from our Birthday Magic Clear Stamps. The fishtail banner came from Word Set 5 - Royalty. The apple came from our Bookworm set and the leaf from Fun Flowers.
Open the card to reveal the pop-up caterpillar, made using the Arch Pop-up, Party Balloons, Balloon Collage Add-ons and trimmed antlers from Animal Add-ons 3. For the greeting I used the Birthday Magic Clear Stamps on Labels- Crosshatch.
To make the eyes and mouth of the caterpillar I hand cut scraps of cardstock to resemble the look of the book inspiration.
Let's take a look at how our talented Design Team interpreted the LETTER challenge. In each case you can click the designer's name to go to their blog or social media post where you'll find additional photos, supply lists and, in some cases, videos!
Sandy Diller is celebrating Halloween Fest for the entire month of September with new cards daily. For the Designer Challenge card she was inspired by the letter B for BOO! She use the Twist Flower Pop-up to animate the letters. Be sure to click over to Sandy's blog for a video of this card in action and to follow along with her daily Halloween inspiration.
Jen Webster created an amazing "Sending you all my bloody love" Halloween card featuring the Mailbox Pop-up and I am in awe of her coloring skills to make the rust spots on the mailbox. Be sure to click over to Jen's blog to see the equally stunning card front. Fa-boo-lous!
Nicky Foden makes slasher film birthday cards for her brother and this year's is a triumph! She used the Pop 'n Swap die set, modified to a Pop 'n Pop mechanism, to animate Michael. The front of the card features a custom greeting cut with our Mini Alphabet die to fulfill the "letter" part of the challenge. Be sure to click over to Nicky's blog for a full photo tutorial of this epic card!
Sue Small-Kreider created a magical Harry Potter themed card and modified the Arch Pop-up to make stone archway. She has a full process video for this amazing card teaching all the fun techniques. I love her custom crosshatch envelope for the "letter" part of the challenge. So brilliant!
Lois Bak had a great idea for the letter challenge - alphabet blocks! She used the Surprise Cube and Slider Box to create a delightful exploding blocks card, sure to delight the 3-year-old recipient. I love the bright colors and fun patterns. Click over to watch this card in action!
Frances Byrne created literal happy mail and I cannot help but smile! She combined the Postage Pop-up with the Mailbox Pop-up (or letter box, if you prefer!) to create a wonderful scene. I love everything about this bright and detailed card. Click over for more photos. Love it!
Suzanne Smit brings smiiles with this delightful pig-themed birthday card, personalized with the letters of the recipient's name. She used the Flip Frame Pop-up to animate the first envelope and then the cute little piggies are holding the letters. Click over for the fun card front. So creative!
Well we hope you are inspired to create some letter-themed cards of your own. Join us next month on October 8, 2025 for our next Designer Challenge with a theme of PEEK-A-BOO! I'm looking forward to how the team will interpret the prompt!
Happy Crafting!
