Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 102: LOVE IS IN THE AIR!

Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 102: LOVE IS IN THE AIR!

Posted by Karen Burniston on Feb 4th 2026

Happy February and Happy New Release!

The theme this month is LOVE IS IN THE AIR - I challenged the team to make a love-themed card with something in the air. As usual, their projects will amaze and astound you!

For my card and video I am teaching the assembly of the new Photo Gallery Pop-up, combined with the Love Is In The Air Charms and Love Notes Clear Stamps for a striking black and white Valentine.

Learn how I made this card by watching the video tutorial:

My card is a landscape A2 (5.5" x 4.25) and can be mailed in an A2 envelope. For the front of the card I repeated elements from the inside, combining the two dies and stamp set for a simple lead-in to the magic inside. I used lightweight white cardstock and a 0.05mm Staedtler Pigment Liner pen for the styling.

As the card opens the two Photo Galleries start to stand up.

Once open the double Photo Gallery is revealed. The panels are decorated with charms and stamps, all styled in a black and white sketch or comics style.

The goal with Designer Challenge videos is to spark ideas and this one leaves so many avenues for customization by adding in a little (or a lot of) color. The Photo Gallery is the perfect way to showcase charms, animals, stamps, embellishments or photos.

Check this out! I asked the Design Team if anyone wanted to copy this card in color and Lois jumped right on it. Her pink and green version is stunning!

Now let's take a look at the amazing ideas from the Design Team. In each case you can click on the designer's name to go to their blog post. On their blogs you will find additional photos, supply lists and, in some cases, full video or photo tutorials.

Jen Webster made the most adorable Whirly Wheel Card featuring leaping frogs in a pink heart-filled sky. Click over to her blog to watch a video of this card in action. So delightful!

Lois Bak made a Fancy Label Accordion with solid end panels and open frames inside. This allowed her to dangle charms in the panels for a wonderful Valentine. Click over for more photos of this charming card!

Suzanne Smit is the queen of our animal dies! I love the way she creates such personality with the little critters. This Landscape Rectangle Accordion is another great example of her menagerie skills, featuring a sky full of lovestruck owls. Click over to learn more. Fabulous!

Sue Small-Kreider also made an accordion card for the challenge and I love how all three accordion cards are so different! For Sue's card she used the Fancy Label Accordion with circle cut-outs to allow for dangling charms. Click over to Sue's blog to watch a video for this card. Love it!

Sandy Diller used the new Stage Pop-up for an amazing card featuring a crescent moon and dangling hot air balloon charm. Absolutely amazing! Be sure to click over to Sandy's blog for a video of this card. Love, love, love!

Nicky Foden made a Valentine's card for her hubby featuring our new Hot Air Balloons die on several Small Scenes Bam Boxes. I love that Nicky has a full photo tutorial for her card including her full process and how she corrected any issues. She also has a great tip for die cutting magnet sheets for a closure. Click over to learn a ton!

Well we hope you feel inspired to make some love-themed card of your own. Join us next month on March 4, 2026 for Designer Challenge 103 with a theme of FOR THE BIRDS. We will be incorporating birds into our cards.

Happy Crafting!
