Karen Burniston Designer Challenge 100: Song Lyrics!
Posted by Karen Burniston on Dec 3rd 2025
Wow! We made it to Designer Challenge ONE HUNDRED! How cool is that?
We're going to celebrate good times with a Song Lyrics challenge that will have you walking on sunshine, singing in the rain, walking in a winter wonderland or maybe tiptoeing through the tulips. Are you ready for it?
For my lyrics I chose Do You Want to Build a Snowman? from the movie Frozen. (Also check out the Lea Michele version, which is gorgeous!)

Learn this card technique by watching the full tutorial here:
My card measures 5" x 7" and can be mailed in an A7 envelope. The front is very simple - just patterned paper and a clear window with the song lyrics "etched" onto the glass. I loved the idea of seeing through the words to the snowman parts below.

As the card starts to open the song lyrics and the postage frame start to lift and separate. The Postage Pop-up is perfect for scene building.

Once open the full scene can be viewed. The postage frame is popped up and a full snowman is revealed.

Here's a closer look at the card's interior. One thing I like to do with cards that feature a lot of white is to use different whites for the elements. The snow banks on the postage frame have a different texture than the snowflakes and the snowman is made from a shimmer white.

Ready to give this card a try? Here are the dies and supplies used in the video. The patterned papers are older styles from Echo Park.

Now let's take a look at the wonderful Song Lyrics inspiration by our talented Design Team. In each case you can click their name to go to their blog posts where you will find additional photos, supply lists and, in some cases, photo or video tutorials!
Jen Webster really went over the top with her project this month making an entire pop-up Christmas song book! I am blown away by all the amazingness of this creation and it definitely puts me in the mood for Christmas caroling! Click over to see this song book on video.

Sue Small-Kreider used the new Playful Pop-up with the Dog and Cat Playful Add-ons to create a dynamic cat-themed birthday card featuring famous What's new? lyrics. Sue has a video for this card so be sure to click over. (But be prepared to start humming the tune, because of course you will!)

Nicky Foden was inspired by Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer for her festive card. I have been loving the team's creative characters made using the new Playful Pop-up and the way they've been using shape dies to add a body to the character. Be sure to click over to Nicky's photo tutorial for this joyful card.

Suzanne Smit was inspired by a song from the 1984 that had a huge cultural impact in the Netherlands. If you are unfamiliar with the song and the meaning behind it be sure to click over to Suzanne's blog for the English translation. She animated the heart using the Twist Flower mechanism and kept the card simple to emphasize the impact and importance of the message. I love this.

Lois Bak made two cards for the challenge and they are both stunners! First, she made a Christmas version of a card technique from the October Virtual Class that taught an alternate assembly for the Charm Accordion die set. I love those cutie Winter Animals enjoying their White Christmas.

Next, Lois used the Postage Pop-up and her new favorite die, the Pine Cone, to create a card featuring the Osmonds version of It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The Postage Pop-up is such a great choice for making little vignettes. Click over to Lois's blog for more info on both these great cards.

Sandy Diller found the perfect song lyric in one of our clear stamps "You make my heart sing!" and then she illustrated it perfectly with a combination of the Piano Keys Pop-up and the Playful Pop-up with Dog and Cat Playful Add-ons. This is such a great way to chain pop-ups together for more interactive fun!

Well we hope you have some collected some ideas for Song Lyric cards. Join us next year on January 7, 2026 for our 101st Designer Challenge with a theme of BUGS. We will be incorporating a bug or bugs into our projects.
Happy Crafting!
